Gathered on vacation and decided that it would be nice to feel for a while as a local, not a tourist? Rental apartments in this case is an excellent alternative to the hotel. On the eve of the New Year holidays, we have prepared practical recommendations on how to avoid fooling around when choosing a holiday home.

It is no secret that Airbnb remains one of the most popular resources for travelers, despite the fact that in some countries the resource is going through hard times, and in some places it has been banned by the official authorities. Nevertheless, tourists looking for accommodation in various parts of the world come here to find options from a luxurious penthouse to a rustic bungalow. Someone in the end remains satisfied, and someone at the end of the holiday scolds homeowners on what the world is worth.

Since I have been on different sides of the barricades, perhaps I will allow myself to give some recommendations. They will be useful both to those who managed to be disappointed in such a rest, and to those who are just beginning to use the service and would like to avoid minor troubles.

1. The phrase "the apartment is located in the center" does not mean that it is located there

Having written such a phrase in the ad, the host does not intend to deceive you. In many cities, the concept of the center is quite extensible: it can be a tourist center, a nightlife center, or a business center. Before you start looking for housing, I recommend at least a little to explore the features of the city, since all these "centers" may not be the same place. I'm not talking about a city like Berlin, where in general there are three completely official city centers in different places. If the study of maps and guidebooks does not clarify, check with the landlord and put specific questions in front of him. You will have to specifically answer specific questions, and very few people will deliberately deceive you.

2. Photos may give a false impression of the footage

Often photos of housing can be misleading to the inexperienced traveler. If the apartments are filmed on a professional camera, then, due to the peculiarities of such equipment, in the photographs of the room appear larger. And the huge living room where you planned to waltz can turn out to be quite a compact room, in which there is one step from window to table and from table to sofa. If the size of the room you are fundamentally important, it is better to specify the footage in advance.

3. If in one photo you cannot see one part of the room – be alert

Quite often you can see everything in the photos, except for one wall or a full-fledged view of the bathroom. Sometimes this can actually be an accident. Look more closely if the landlord deliberately avoids showing any part of the property, I would be wary of your place.

I myself had a situation when, renting an apartment for a holiday, I noticed that one wall does not fall on photographs taken from different angles. However, everything else was wonderful, and I decided not to specify why. You will not believe that it was on this wall that there was a crack and several smudges. It was not catastrophic, but once again proved: if something is not visible, then there is a high probability that this is where the problem lies.

4. Carefully read the description of the apartment and do not hesitate to demand a discount

Carefully study what is in the apartment, so that the absence of the Internet, about which the owner warned the site, does not come as a surprise to you. If, on arrival, it turned out that some important options are missing, the photos on the website were taken 10 years ago, furniture and appliances are already breathing their last, feel free to ask for a discount or contact Airbnb within 12 hours – the company I am obliged to find you an equivalent option without any additional payments, even if you are relocated to more expensive housing. The owner of this situation faces penalties, so usually everyone is trying to solve the case amicably, giving discounts or additional bonuses.

I would like to draw attention to the indication of the prohibition of smoking. This is not a formal phrase, so if you still decide to smoke in the apartment, do not be surprised that you will receive a bad review from the owner as a result. Even if you have aired the apartment for a long time, the nose of a non-smoking person will immediately smell the smell of cigarette smoke. Do not forget that guests will arrive after you, who specifically chose an apartment without the remains of tobacco scent and later the owner will receive a negative review. If you, like me, can not resist the bad habit, choose apartments with balconies, terraces or official permission to smoke on the premises.

5. Apartment is not a hotel, do not expect daily cleaning

If you are accustomed to live in hotels, then be prepared for the fact that in the apartment you will not find disposable slippers and shower caps, as this is not included with the mandatory program. Also, you will not be cleaned every day, because at the time of renting the apartment is considered yours, and the owner, in principle, cannot appear in it, except in emergency cases, which he must warn you about.

I also do not recommend disturbing the noise regime, as in Europe you are unlikely to knock on the battery or ring the doorbell asking you to turn the music down. If in such a situation someone calls you at the door, these are police officers. And communication with the police is unlikely to decorate your holiday, although it will add a little extreme to it.

6. Too low apartment prices should be alarming

In most cases, I do not recommend taking a home with a very low price, you do not expect perfect quality and long work from the Chinese fake. More precisely, we certainly hope for this, but we suspect that we may not be lucky. Here you have to count on luck. To understand which price is considered low and which price is too high, examine the average price per market. I note that there are still exceptions. If the apartment is completely new and it has no reviews, then the owner most likely set a low price in order to get guests, reviews and a good rating as soon as possible. In this case, you have a chance to get even more than you expected. In other cases, read the reviews – this is one of the most reliable ways to make the right choice. The more positive reviews, the higher the likelihood that you will have pleasant impressions from the rest!

Ahead of the New Year holidays! Let them be bright and cloudless in the literal and figurative sense of the word!
